New at GDS: More Exciting Brands and a New Improved Trend Concept

Buyers on the look-out for the most important trends and looks for the 2011 Spring/Summer season will be given a comprehensive overview of the sector at GDS from 10 to 12 September 2010. Some 760 international exhibitors with approx. 1,750 collections will be presenting a comprehensive range of progressive and classic premium brands, fashion quality brands, the colourful street and sportswear scene as well as the latest kids’ fashion. Numerous newcomers have already registered to exhibit. These include interesting brands like Antichic, Badgley Mischka, Betsey Johnson, Carlos Santos, Cesare Paciotti, D.A.T.E., Four Leather, Franca, Ikks Shoes, King, Mac Dugan with Carlo Ventura and Koxks, Mika, Luca Mode, Luciana Cavalli, MCM, Orquídea Negra, Premiata, Prima Ballerina, Santandrea, Sofia Costa, Swiss Line and many more.

Furthermore, under its “Follow the Trends” umbrella brand GDS will be improving its trend concept even further. “As an international fashion and trend trade fair we wish to satisfy our visitors’ great information needs to the very best of our ability without overburdening them. This is why we are now fine-tuning our trend concept,” explains GDS Director Kirstin Deutelmoser. At GDS this trend concept runs through the fair like an underlying visual thread guiding visitors through the different halls. What’s new here is that visitors can now already see at the entrance area where each trend theme is located. The trend fashion show presents the new looks and styles prevailing on the fashion scene. Trend installations provide information on product details and inspiration for goods displays in the store. Furthermore, experts provide insight into long-term lifestyle trends and their impact on shoes and accessories. Lectures on key fashion and ordering tendencies and special themes supplement the range. In order that visitors can prepare fully for the fair there will in future be considerably more information available ahead of the fair on the GDS website.

Portraits of Selected New Exhibitors
Behind the fashion label Badgley Mischka is the duo Mark Badgley and James Mischka. These two designers had a vision back in 1988: they wanted to bring the glamorous fashion style of the 1940s back onto the red carpet. According to Vogue they now rank amongst the top ten US designers. The style of their creations is sophisticated and is not only aimed at younger consumers but at all women who prefer modern, wearable couture. The first shoe line came onto the market in 1999. Celebrities like Madonna, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Garner, Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Sarah Jessica Parker and Ashley Judd value the timeless designs of these Hollywood darlings. The brand’s signature style is simple yet perfectly elegant. The finest materials and highest skilled craftsmanship characterise the design. www.badgleymischka.com

With her unique and original creations New York designer Betsey Johnson has been a key generator of impulses in the fashion industry since the 1960s. After designing for other brands for over ten years she launched her own eponymous label in 1978. Today her creations are stocked at over 65 stores worldwide. A milestone year in the Betsey Johnson story is 2003. This was the year she shifted focus onto new target groups and extended her portfolio to include, amongst other things, shoes and accessories. Since then she has been considered not only a pure fashion designer but also a first-class US lifestyle brand. Numerous awards like being included in the Fashion Walk of Fame honour Betsey Johnson’s work in American fashion. Her flamboyant styles bear witness to loving attention to detail, enthusiasm, limitless creativity and great talent. www.betseyjohnson.com

In 2004 two talented young designers and two marketing students decided to pool their abilities and channel their personal experience into an ambitious project: with great creativity, expertise and fashion focus they designed their first D.A.T.E. sneakers. The result was a label that meets the high standards of the “Made in Italy” tradition and convinces customers with carefully chosen materials, high quality and skilled craftsmanship. D.A.T.E. was originally inspired by the London street markets: styles from the early 1970s appear here alongside cheerful colours influenced by the nightlife of the British metropolis. www.date-sneakers.it

With its bags and accessories German brand MCM has stood for luxury, elegance and skilled craftsmanship since its founding in 1976. Over the past few years MCM has evolved into an international fashion brand with a range of extraordinary product lines. The brand opened new branches in over 25 countries including Germany, Italy, Great Britain, China and the USA thereby rapidly conquering new markets in the global luxury segment. 2009 saw the dawn of a new era with the MCM New York Collection and the opening of 15 departments in the best Saks Fifth Avenue stores. This collection picks up again on MCM’s old values of prestige and quality and combines these with a more modern, luxurious lifestyle. Lovers of the label today include VIPs like Lydia Hearst, Coco Rocha, Heidi Klum, Cindy Crawford, Veronica Webb and Patricia Field. www.mcmworldwide.com

The collection by Mika from Japan boasts an extraordinarily striking and artisan feel. Designer Mika Mochizuki is a mere 30 years old and considers herself a perfectly normal girl with a passion for shoes. She sees designing footwear as a way to live her creativity. The styles were originally just meant for her personal use. But since the brand launch in 2006 they have been available in selected boutiques and online. With her designs Mika addresses the current generation of the fashion community: feminine, freedom-loving and elegant young women. Mika is part of Aoi Footwear, a company founded in Central Japan as early as 1953. www.mika-footwear.com

GLOBAL SHOES: Strong Platform for the Global Volume Business
March 2007 saw the launch of GLOBAL SHOES as an independent fair in its own right. Since then the two concurrent fairs have been clearly separate in spatial terms. The volume business was previously part of GDS. In September of this year the leading trade show for sourcing held in Halls 8a and 8b featuring some 360 exhibitors will once again provide a complete overview of the global volume business. “GLOBAL SHOES is a strong platform which will also attract large numbers of key interested buyers and producers at its next event,” explains GLOBAL SHOES Director Kirstin Deutelmoser. After a market adjustment against the backdrop of the global economic crisis this volume fair has stood its ground as a key business-to-business platform.

The next GDS / GLOBAL SHOES trade fairs will be held from 10 to 12 September 2010.
